When can a paternity test be administered without the mother?

You certainly can take a home paternity test without the mother’s DNA. Even though the standard home paternity test kit includes DNA swabs for the mother, father, and the child, it is not required to have the mother’s DNA. The mother’s participation is encouraged, both in the process and the testing, but that is left up to the participants to decide.

The fact is, sometimes the mother simply isn’t available or prefers not to take part in the paternity test. Does that mean you should forget about taking the test? Absolutely not. A sample from the mother can help increase the final percentage of the test results, but you can still get conclusive results without her DNA.  Without her participation, the probability of paternity from our laboratory can be 99.99% and higher. With her participation, the probability increases to 99.999% and higher.

A child inherits their DNA from their mother and their father equally. Without DNA from the mother, the child’s DNA can only be compared to the DNA from the father. These DNA tests, sometimes called a motherless test or single parent-child DNA test, involve no extra steps from the participating father and are performed the same way the test would be if the mother was also taking part.

If you are considering taking a paternity test without the mother it is important to remember that all DNA paternity tests involving a minor require written consent of the legal guardian for the child to be tested. If the child is 18 years old or older there is no consent required for the test.

Also consider that it is possible for motherless tests to involve additional analysis. Some laboratories will skip this important step to cut costs, and release results of only 99%. Our laboratories standards require additional analysis to ensure accurate results. Because of this, some tests may take additional time. Although additional analysis may be required for single parent-child tests, we do not charge additional fees.
